How to write Easy Read content
Easy Read is an accessible form of content writing for people with learning disabilities. It uses short, simple sentences with pictures. This way of writing makes complex information easier to understand.
Companies are required by law to provide Easy Read information if requested. Any important documents should already be provided in an Easy Read format. It is important you know how to write Easy Read content and get it right.
Keep content concise
Any Easy Read content should be kept short and simple. Only tell people what they need to know.
Keep all sentences and paragraphs short. Use full stops instead of commas or ‘and’. The document should be no more than 10 pages long.
Do not use jargon or acronyms. Use plain English only. Explain any words that the user may not know. Try using this A-Z of plain English alternatives.
Always use pictures
Use big, simple pictures to help explain your text. Images should be on the left-hand side of the text. Try to use one image for every sentence.

Use readable text
Use sans serif fonts like Verdana, Calibri, Arial and Tahoma. Use a large font, at least size 16. Do not use italics, underlining or all capitals. Try to avoid using abbreviations, like don’t or e.g.
Use headings to split up content. For longer documents, you should have a list of contents.
Don’t forget accessibility basics
People with learning disabilities are far more likely to have a serious sight problem. There are many examples of Easy Read documents online that have basic accessibility issues.

Make the document accessible
Remember, not everyone has Microsoft Word! Convert the document to PDF and use Adobe Acrobat to make the PDF accessible. The document must be screen reader compatible.
Get feedback
Test the document with people with learning disabilities where possible. Allow users to provide feedback or suggestions. Remember, you are not the target audience here.
